On the grounds of intelligence and rationality, I would like you to understand that any selfishness in you is absolutely disharmonious and improper. No human being has got a right or even a permission to become selfish. What is meant by selfishness? The craving of the senses, the emotions of the mind towards your own happiness, the curiosity of the intelligence to enhance your own prosperity, the urges of your ego – all these, which will serve your own immediate purpose, come under selfishness.

How were you born and how are you alive today? Were you born all alone by yourself? No! Your birth was instrumented by a couple, a set of parents. And the parents have tended you very well. They have shared many things with you. So, you are grateful to the parents. Without the parents you would not have been born. Just as you are interested in your welfare, being "selfish", you should also be interested in the welfare and well being of your parents. There is no option in this matter. If you are selfish, you also have to be "parentish"!

If the parents have other children, your brothers and sisters, naturally as you are, so are they. In the same manner, the father and mother have their brothers and sisters. You will have to be equally interested in them. As you are interested in your own brothers and sisters, your parents also are interested in theirs. Naturally the thought of the parents should also link you up to the parents' brothers and sisters.

Like this, you start growing. "As I am an individual being, so is my family an individual entity, to which I belong. Myself and my family belong to the society. The society is therefore my larger family. As I am a member of my family, my family is a member of the society. And the smaller society is a member of the larger society." Thinking on these lines, you will find that the thought of selfishness itself obliges you to expand your mind and vision, until at last you are able to be globally connected, universally connected. Your mind then becomes universal.

Human rationality compels and persuades you to incorporate familial and societal virtues.
